The 8-day trip, Kid-friendly Ecotour to the Caribbean Coast, minimizes time in the car while maximizing fun for little ones and their families. Three of the days are with a bilingual naturalist guide/driver.

  • Walk on an easy jungle trail along the beach in Cahuita National Park to see monkeys, sloths and iguanas.
  • Visit an indigenous village in a dugout canoe to see how chocolate is grown and processed. Have freshly made chocolate sauce with organic bananas!
  • Experience village and farm life, meet other kids.
  • Have fun at the beach!

Day 1: Welcome to Costa Rica!
An ACTUAR driver will meet your flight and take you to La Rosa de América in Alajuela. If you have time, visit the Zoo Ave, Latin America's premier animal rescue and rehabilitation center, within walking distance of your hotel. No meals included.

Day 2: To the Caribbean!
Your ACTUAR naturalist guide/driver will pick you up around 9 a.m. and take you through the mountains of Braulio Carrillo National Park and down to the Caribbean coast.

Once there, continue 4 kilometers into the hills to reach Casa Calateas, Have a tasty campesino lunch and get to know the people of the community by visiting some local farms. At sunset, walk to their observation platform, where you can see the mountains of La Amistad International Park stretching into Panamá. That evening, learn how to cook the delicious native fish and coconut stew, rondón. All meals included.

Day 3: Look for monkeys and iguanas in Cahuita National Park!
Hike on a shady trail along the beach with your guide in Cahuita National Park, where you can see sloths, iguanas and monkeys. Have a delicious down home Caribbean lunch in the town of Cahuita. Spend a quiet afternoon at Casa Calateas. Overnight at Casa Calateas. All meals included.

Day 4: See where chocolate comes from!
Get up early and travel with your guide to the village of Bambú where you will meet the BriBri boatmen who will take you by dugout canoe to the isolated riverside village of Yorkín. Meet the villagers, and see how they process chocolate from their sacred tree, the cacao. Taste the fruit fresh from the pod, and see how it is dried, roasted and ground into hot chocolate.

The community of Yorkín raises cacao and bananas in harmony with nature in order to protect the huge number of migrating birds that touch down in this region. Watch a video about Yorkín. That afternoon, your guide will take you to a hotel near the beach. Say goodbye to your guide.

Day 5: To the beach!
Have fun at Playa Chiquita south of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, about half an hour south of Casa Calateas. Overnight at a hotel near the beach, breakfast included.

Day 6: Another day at the beach!
Enjoy the beach at Playa Chiquita. You could also visit the local animal rescue and rehabilitation center. Overnight at a hotel near the beach, breakfast included.

Day 7: Your last morning at the beach...
Take the afternoon Interbus to San José and stay at Hotel Aranjuez, a kid-friendly hotel, breakfast included.

Day 8: Come back soon!
An ACTUAR driver will pick you up in time to get you to the airport 3 hours before your return flight.
